USA - Los Angeles

Welcome to Los Angeles.

Los Angeles city of dreams. Glitz and dazzle, attractions too numerous to mention, and an almost perfect climate to enjoy them in - that's Los Angeles.

The movie city

LA was a dusty backwater until its endless sunshine and wide open spaces brought the young movie industry over from the East Coast.

USA - Los Angeles

Part of the city's buzz is that the stars still live and work here - you never know who you might glimpse. Try window shopping on Melrose Avenue, Sunset Strip or Rodeo Drive where Julia Roberts shopped for her new wardrobe in "Pretty Woman".

Sashay down to Mann's Chinese theatre, where the prints, hooves and paws of 200 stars of Hollywood's golden age are immortalised in concrete. You can have your own prints made and framed at the theatre.

Then wander the Hollywood Walk of Fame and find your favourites among the 2,000 pavement stars.

Take the Universal Studios tour; it's a theme park and working Hollywood studio all in one. Then see Paramount studios where you can watch TV shows being taped.

And don't forget the Silent Movie Theatre where the classics that started it all are shown.

Heard that LA has no culture? Don't you believe it! It's packed with museums, galleries, music and entertainment venues. Griffith Park, home of the observatory and LA's largest green space, covers more than 4,000 acres and dwarfs NY City's 'mere' 843 acre Central Park.

Rollerbladers, Los Angeles.

Must see museums include Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Getty Museum, an architectural marvel.

Visit the interactive California Science Centre and the Page Museum where the remains of prehistoric creatures retrieved from a sticky end in the La Brea Tar Pits are displayed.

If it's the latest thing, the stars will have discovered it yesterday. Cuisine here is a marvellous mix of Mexican, Pacific, Asian, seafood and gourmet influences. Tuck in!

There are miles of spectacular beaches along the coast but you'll want to see the places celebrated in movies and songs. Retro Santa Monica Pier, Malibu and racy Venice Beach.

LA County is the theme park capital of the world, home of Disneyland. Disney philosophy is that the whole park is one giant "show", where you become a star yourself by entering the magical kingdom.

Home to more than 12,000 animals, including sea otters and giant spider crabs, the Aquarium of the Pacific, south of LA, is also a must.

Like to squeal? Six Flags Magic Mountain has more than 165 thrill rides.

Knott's Berry Farm (once a real berry farm) has got both history and heart - plus oodles of shows, rides, entertainment and eats.
